How to start a furniture business in South Africa: a practical checklist

Furniture can be a good business, but it is operationally demanding. This guide helps new South African sellers think through product focus, supplier reliability, delivery promises and customer education before launching.

Start with one tight category

Do not try to sell every furniture type on day one. Pick a focused niche such as couches, headboards, dining chairs or compact apartment pieces, then learn the measurements, objections, lead times and delivery risks for that niche.

Build supplier and SKU discipline early

Record supplier names, lead times, minimum order quantities, payment terms, product dimensions, fabric options and SKU rules. A simple spreadsheet is enough at first, but the rules must be consistent before marketing begins.

Plan delivery before promising sales

Furniture delivery needs packaging, vehicle planning, access notes, customer communication and damage handling. Your delivery script should cover estates, apartments, offices, regional quotes and failed access before customers pay.
